Rare Antique Zulu Shield
An original authentic fighting example, the patina on the reverse shows evidence of having been carried over time. Certainly of the size carried by Zulu warriors at the time of the Bambatha Rebelion, though I suspect this may in fact be an earlier example, dating the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Extremely rare late 18th Century pike of the Strathspey Fencibles.
Upon the declaration of war by France in 1793, Sir James Grant of Grant raised this Scottish regiment of fencibles, of which he was appointed colonel. The fencibles are a forgotten army of the Napoleonic Wars, volunteers raised to counter French invasion.
